Social Spotlight on Revive Leeds
By Elyssia Dunmore
Location: Seacroft Leeds, Kirkstall Leeds
As the name suggests, Revive is a Leeds-based social enterprise. Fighting back against the emerging throwaway culture, the concept was developed by three charities: St Vincent De Paul, Emmaus Leeds and South Leeds Alternative Trading Enterprise (SLATE.)
Opening in 2011 Revive now boasts retail outlets at two major Leeds waste disposal sites – Seacroft and Kirkstall Road tips. By taking donations directly, redirecting items that are too good to throw away or encouraging site workers to collect goods prior to tipping, they are able to stock their stores. The profits are then split equally between St Vincent De Paul and SLATE.
What can only be described as an Aladdin’s treasure cave awaits those who visit either shop. From good quality bric-a-brac and furniture, to clothes, all are sold at heavily discounted and often flat rate prices. Literary fans are welcomed with open arms to view books as far as the eye can see, with it being estimated that 1000+ copies are sold per week! Also, for the occasions when rare or unusual items are donated, Revive have an eBay page set up to generate more income.
Always on the look-out for an extra pair of hands, Revive volunteers can be trained in a wide range of skills from Health and Safety to Food and Hygiene. Alternatively, if you come to shop, it is guaranteed any resolve to “just browse” can be left at the door.
Word is spreading about this hotspot. With Revive supporting charities, socially helping local communities and environmentally redirecting tonnes away from unnecessary landfill, this positive publicity is well deserved. Visit, donate or volunteer today!
