BIG £250k helps youth Make their Mark on social enterprise

The Big Lottery Fund is helping to create a new bank of young social entrepreneurs by backing this year's Make Your Mark With a Tenner initiative.

A £250,000 grant to Enterprise UK will support this unique opportunity which taps into the innovative minds of young people, giving them the chance to make their ideas happen.

Make Your Mark With a Tenner loans young people £10 and challenges them to make as much profit and social impact as they can over the space of a month. In 2009 over 16,000 young people under the age of 19 took part in the initiative, with the top 50 entries making an impressive average profit of £261.

The grant from BIG will be used to extend the initiative into areas of England where young people have little opportunity to gain experience in social enterprise. It will also help evaluate the impact of the 'Make Your Mark' experience on the participants and share learning with relevant national and local organisations such as enterprise and young people's organisations.

Young entrepreneurs are being encouraged to explore ideas that pay off for their local communities.

The Big Lottery Fund is backing this year's Make your mark with a tenner initiative with a £250,000 grant to Enterprise UK, which organises the campaign.

Make your mark loans young people aged 19 and under £10 and challenges them to make as much profit and social impact as they can during the month of March through an enterprise which benefits their community.

The Big Lottery grant will be used to extend the initiative into areas of England where young people have previously had little opportunity to gain experience in social enterprise.

More than 16,000 young people took part last year, with the top 50 entries making an average profit of £261.

Deputy director of policy and partnerships at the Big Lottery Fund (England), Margaret Cooney, said: ‘This is a unique opportunity to get some real hands-on experience of entrepreneurship with real money, and offers a chance for initiative and creativity to shine through.’

‘Robin Hood’ bank tax to fight poverty

A charity coalition has launched a campaign calling for people to ‘be part of the world's greatest bank job’ - a tax on banks to help the poor.

A ten-metre high appeal was projected near Bank underground station in London today, inviting early-morning commuters to support the proposed ‘Robin Hood Tax’.

The group, made up of nearly 50 aid agencies, green groups, unions and faith organisations, is calling on political party leaders to support a 0.05% tax on international bankers' transactions – effectively the Tobin tax of a small levy on financial transactions between banks.

The coalition says the tax, which would apply only to speculative trading, not high-street banking, could raise up to £250bn a year to fight poverty, protect public services and tackle climate change.

In a message to party leaders, the group - including Oxfam, Save the Children, Housing Justice, the TUC, Greenpeace and ActionAid – said: ‘We believe the banks, which had a large role in causing the economic crisis, should do more than just pay back the bailouts – or insure against future crises.’

‘It is time for a new, practical contract with banks to improve the society they serve.’

Council buys recession-busting shopping centre

A shopping centre that has retained 100% occupancy despite the recession has changed hands as part of a £11.5m sale.

Developer St Modwen has sold Catford Shopping Centre in southeast London to Lewisham Council.

The council will run the centre through a wholly owned company called the Catford Regeneration Partnership.

St Modwen, which has owned the centre since 1993, will reinvest funds raised through the sale into ventures including its other property in the borough, Leegate Shopping Centre, where plans for redevelopment are currently being considered.

Senior development manager Killian Morris said Catford Shopping Centre was ‘a vibrant shopping facility at the heart of the borough, and we are confident that the council’s decision to purchase the centre will see it continue to play a pivotal part in Catford and among the local community’.
